Dip your paddle into the dark water and watch it explode with neon blue light. Florida's bioluminescent Indian River Lagoon is one of the most spectacular natural light shows on Earth β and you can kayak right through it.
Bioluminescence in the Indian River Lagoon is produced by microscopic dinoflagellates β single-celled organisms called Pyrocystis lunula and Noctiluca scintillans. When disturbed by movement, they emit a brilliant blue-green flash of light through a chemical reaction involving luciferin and luciferase.
