Bioluminescence in the Indian River Lagoon is produced by microscopic dinoflagellates — single-celled organisms called Pyrocystis lunula and Noctiluca scintillans. When disturbed by movement, they emit a brilliant blue-green flash of light through a chemical reaction involving luciferin and luciferase.
The Indian River Lagoon near Cocoa Beach is world-renowned for its bioluminescent intensity. On peak nights during summer and early fall, the water can glow so brightly that you can see your handprint glowing beneath the surface.
